Rowlett–Lake Pointe Medical Center has recently expanded their Emergency Department (ED) to help meet the growing health care needs of the residents in Rowlett , Rockwall and the surrounding areas. The expansion of the ED from eight beds to twenty beds spread out in comfortable treatment rooms, was designed to enhance the patient treatment process and reduce wait times.

As part of this project, the Hospital incorporated into the ED a Fast Track service. Fast Track is housed in a separate area within the ED and is staffed and equipped to treat patients with non-urgent illnesses and injuries. The Fast Track service helps expedite the treatment process for non-urgent patients, while allowing for the more critically ill patients to be treated in a separate area designed to meet the special needs of these patients.

Another component of this new ED expansion is the MedHost computerized patient tracking system. This technology helps ED staff treat and track patients more efficiently with the overall goal of reducing patient waiting times. The tracking system provides a real time electronic patient status that can be confidentially accessed from several terminals within the ED. It also provides numerous prompts that help the nursing staff and physicians continuously monitor the patients’ treatment process throughout their entire visit.

The ED expansion is just one phase of the ongoing service and facility expansion occurring at Lake Pointe Medical Center. According to John Harris, Chief Executive Officer at Lake Pointe Medical Center, “Our development strategy at Lake Pointe is to continue to expand our scope of services and facilities as appropriate to meet the growing needs of the residents in our area, and provide our services in a customer service-oriented manner”. The Hospital recently installed a new, technologically advanced cardiac catheterization laboratory as another service addition to the expanding cardiology program, and is also currently undergoing a major facility expansion which includes enhanced Labor and Delivery Services with a Level 2 Nursery with 24 hour, seven day a week neonatology coverage to care for sicker babies, a Sleep Center and a newly remodeled Surgery Department with 8 operating rooms. This current project is expected to be completed by August, 2004. Other pending development projects include a new 60,000 square foot medical office building and ambulatory surgical center in Rockwall, which is scheduled to open in April, 2005, and a 10,000 square foot office building in Royse City.
