Lake Pointe Medical Center is pleased to announce the grand opening of the Lake Pointe Sleep Lab in Rockwall.

The Sleep Lab is the hospital’s second expansion in the Rockwall community in the past year—the Lake Pointe Imaging Center opened last March. Our goal is to provide a wide array of quality, convenient services to the citizens of Rowlett, Rockwall and surrounding communities, and the opening of the Lake Pointe Sleep Lab in Rockwall significantly furthers that objective.

Experts agree that sleep is vital to overall health, yet for the estimated one-third of Americans who suffer from a sleep disorder, a good night’s rest is elusive. The Lake Pointe Sleep Lab in Rockwall provides confidential diagnosis and is designed to treat a broad range of sleep/wake disorders. To date, we have provided treatment to over 1,000 members of our community.

Josh Whitaker, sleep lab director and a registered member of the Board of Polysomnographic Technologists, attributes one possible reason for the rise in sleep disorders to the growing rate of obesity, which is a risk factor for one of the most common types of sleep disorders—obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissue at the rear of the throat collapses and closes during sleep, constricting the airway. Some patients may be treated with a Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure (CPAP). The CPAP delivers air into the airway through a specially designed nasal mask and is considered the most effective non-surgical treatment for the alleviation of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

More than 12 million Americans are afflicted by the disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health. Other common sleep disorders addressed at the sleep center include Upper Airway Resistant Syndrome, snoring, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy and insomnia.

Lake Pointe Sleep Lab in Rockwall offers four comfortable, convenient suites and is open seven days a week. “The lab is designed to help people who work all shifts—we can work around almost any schedule,” states Whitaker.

Treatment typically begins after recommendation by primary care physicians, and patients may be asked to spend one or more nights at the sleep lab for observation. “We run tests that measure respiratory rates, blood oxygen, brain waves and muscle movement,” Whitaker says. The new center provides a comfortable, spacious environment with carpeted floors and flat-screen televisions. Each room has a private bathroom that is handicap accessible. All these amenities are designed to provide our patients the utmost in comfort and privacy during their stay.
